Month number 8. The “in-between” month. The one that comes after a busy July and just before the return to school, the return to routine, the long office meetings that September typically brings…
For many people, it’s the most anticipated month of the year: because they get to take a vacation and head, for example, to the beach with the whole family and disconnect from big city life. Basically, the month (or at least a week or two) of calm and peace.
However, for many others, it’s the most chaotic month of the year. Either because they live in coastal areas and receive more people than ever—sometimes too many—or because everything is ridiculously expensive for any last-minute getaway.
This time, let’s focus on Mallorca and the month of August, which brings such a saturation of people that daily life on the island becomes a nightmare even Freddy Krueger wouldn’t have subjected the people on Elm Street to. 😊
Hotels at 100% occupancy (it’s rare to find a room available—especially in mid-August—and those prices! Though, of course, supply and demand, it makes sense…), overcrowding everywhere (not even the United Nations has that many nationalities—pardon the redundancy—in one place) from beaches to roads, resources that seem endlessly stretched, and temperatures that make you feel like you’re melting.
Sounds like a movie? Nope. Just another day in Mallorca in August… and even in July. But let’s clarify: we’re generally talking about the most touristy areas (yes, the cliché spots), and we forget about the need to live, present, and offer another side of the island.
Mallorca is still a paradise—but it needs our care. Choosing more responsible tourism, less focused on instant gratification and more open to local experiences, can make a real difference. Instead of following routes dictated by social media, why not be surprised by what doesn’t appear on Instagram?
August will remain a high-demand month, but everyone can choose how to live it: either dive into the hustle and bustle, or seek new ways to connect with Mallorca’s essence. Because Mallorca, even in peak season, still has corners where you can breathe, explore, and enjoy peacefully.
So, from here, we encourage you to experience the lesser-known areas—villages near the hotel, true oases of peace and calm, where locals live, keeping their traditions, their culture, their local shops, their way of life alive. An opportunity to create new connections, new relationships, new emotions—to connect in a different way, building “community,” stepping outside the comfort zone we humans tend to stay in (even though we often behave like robots on autopilot) and stepping into a new reality.
While the coast fills with umbrellas, the Mallorcan interior offers a different experience. Villages like Sineu, Petra, Montuïri, or Sant Joan preserve a peacefulness that contrasts sharply with the coastal chaos. There, you can find traditional markets, rural architecture, family-run wineries, and a cuisine that goes far beyond tourist menus.

August can also be the perfect month to rediscover the island’s cultural heritage: visits to talayots, castles, local museums, or rural churches. Plus, many villages organize workshops, fairs, and patron saint festivals that allow for deeper contact with Mallorcan culture. Participating in a pottery workshop, an olive oil tasting, or a traditional cooking class is a beautiful way to support the local economy and have unique experiences.
So, in short: this is an invitation—more of a reflection, really—towards mindful holidays.
To truly enjoy, in a real and natural way, being—just like in life itself—fully present in the moment, the here and now, without forgetting the footprint we leave behind.
