Today we would like to go for a different but meaningful plan while in the city. Visit some of the most emblematic markets in Palma, the capital of Mallorca.
A market is not just a place where you can find the most typical products of a region, separated by type of food, colour, origin or category. It goes beyond that. It is a multi-sensory experience: the multitude of colours dazzle us, the smells lead us to new dishes, while the voices of the traders and the customers intermingle to create an environment that accentuates our curiosity.
It’s not just about buying products, sitting in one of the bars set up inside the markets and having the full experience, but also appreciating the connection among people and how they interact with each other. The vendor who has been at the same stall for more than 25 years talking to the grandmother who leaves the house to buy potatoes and vegetables to make her stew; the fish delivery man coming to deliver the goods to Carmen; Pepe and his nut shop talking to María who is going to the gym and wants to grab some protein.
The multitude of stories that come out of a market are infinite and all of them deserve to be told. An atmosphere of brotherhood, friendship and relationships established over the years that show us one of the most outstanding features of Mallorcan culture and tradition: the proximity, warmth and affection of its people.
For this reason, we would like to take this opportunity to recommend some of the places you should not miss when visiting Palma. From the most traditional markets in the capital, to those that have been converted into cool and modern people-gathering places, where talking about life and enjoying a few glasses of wines or soft drinks while enjoying national and international delicacies is a daily reality.
Everyone deserves to have their experiences seen and told. So take note of the following ones and enjoy:
Mercat Gastronòmic San Juan (S’Escorxador).
Mercat de l’Olivar (near Plaza de España)
Mercat de Santa Catalina (near Sa Faixina)
Mercat de Pere Garau
Will you tell us how it was? 😊
